When the system drive fills up, Windows slows down, updates fail and programs complain. This guide covers the built-in tools, what they leave behind and how to recover the rest.
The tools Windows already gives you
- Storage Sense (Settings, System, Storage) removes temporary files and empties the recycle bin on a schedule.
- Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) targets update leftovers, delivery optimization files and system temporary files.
- Installed apps - uninstalling software you no longer use is still the fastest way to recover several gigabytes.
What the built-in tools miss
Windows cleans its own temporary folders well, but it does not touch most of what third-party programs leave behind: browser caches in every profile, media and editor caches, log files, orphaned registry entries and leftovers of programs that were uninstalled long ago.

Recovering the rest

Is Disk Cleanup still available in Windows 11?
Yes, cleanmgr is still present, and Storage Sense in Settings covers similar ground.
Does freeing disk space make a PC faster?
A drive close to full can slow the system down, and clearing it helps. Beyond that, disk cleanup is about space and privacy rather than raw speed.
