Delete temporary files on Windows

Temporary files are created constantly: by installers, by updates, by browsers, by editors that save recovery copies. Most are supposed to be removed automatically, and many never are.

Where temporary files live

• C:\Windows\Temp - system-wide temporary files
• %TEMP% - the temporary folder of your user account
• C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download - Windows Update downloads
• Browser cache folders inside each browser profile
• Application caches under %LOCALAPPDATA%

Deleting them with Windows

• Open Settings, go to System, then Storage, then Temporary files, select the categories and remove them.
• Or run cleanmgr, pick the drive and select the temporary file categories.
• Or open %TEMP% in File Explorer and delete the contents; files in use will be skipped, which is normal.

None of this touches personal files, and skipped files simply mean a program is currently using them.

What still remains afterwards

Third-party caches, log files, crash dumps and old installer folders usually survive the built-in cleanup. PrivaZer scans those locations as well, shows what each is worth in disk space and removes only what you approve.

Is it safe to delete everything in the Temp folder?

Yes. Files still in use are locked and simply will not be deleted; the rest can go.

Will deleting temporary files log me out of websites?

Only if you also clear cookies. Temporary files and cookies are separate categories.

How often should temporary files be cleared?

Monthly is enough for most PCs, or automatically through Storage Sense or a scheduled cleanup.
